The Recreation Specialist has the primary responsibility of coordinating and delivering components of the Recreation Program, as well as teaching and exploring projects and career opportunities in trade fields. The individual will work closely with Volunteers, Cottage Parents, the Donald Ralph Cooke School, and Work Program site supervisors to conduct a diversified recreation and arts and crafts program. Duties will vary with changing seasons and allow for the exercise of independent judgment within established program guidelines.

The Recreation Specialist reports directly to the Chaplain/Recreation Director.
This position is expected to work evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays based on program needs.

This position is classified as non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is eligible for overtime pay in accordance with applicable law.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are examples of the types of work performed in this position. Other duties may be assigned.
  1. Organizes, conducts, supervises, and provides opportunities for youth to participate in recreational, educational, and vocational extracurricular activities that enhance personal development and self-worth.
  2. Introduces youth to constructive leisure activities, teaches associated skills, and fosters healthy, lifelong recreational interests, including but not limited to:
    Basketball, Volleyball, Archery, Golf, Jogging, Fishing, Boating, Weightlifting, Swimming, Camping, Alumni Field Days, Pickleball, Football, Tennis, Softball, Soccer, and Arts & Crafts.
  3. Supervises youth and supports the development of work habits and responsibility in alignment with the program’s “work” pillar.
  4. Ensures safety during all activities, including providing safety instruction and enforcing appropriate use of equipment.
  5. Maintains inventory and ensures proper care of equipment through established checkout procedures for distribution to youth and cottages.
  6. Assists the Chaplain/Recreation Director in maintaining the Chapel, gymnasium, and arts and crafts facilities, including conducting inspections, submitting maintenance requests, and ensuring surrounding areas are clean and safe.
  7. Assists in developing and maintaining a monthly activities calendar. Communicates scheduled events to youth and staff and ensures recreation programming is delivered during designated hours (6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.) and on Saturdays.
  8. Serves as a member of the Donald Ralph Cooke School by teaching at least one extracurricular class each semester.
  9. Conducts Lifeguard training for staff and youth to meet organizational needs across campuses.
  10. Provides Water Safety training to staff to support compliance requirements.
  11. Complies with all agency policies, safety standards, and applicable regulatory requirements related to youth supervision, recreation programming, and facility use.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.
  1. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedural manuals; ability to write routine reports and correspondence; and ability to effectively communicate with individuals and groups.
  2. Basic math skills sufficient to perform tasks related to scheduling, inventory, and program planning.
  3. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form and to solve problems involving concrete variables.
  4. Knowledge of instructional practices and ability to establish and maintain rapport with youth.
  5. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with youth, staff, volunteers, and community representatives.
  6. Effective organizational and time management skills.
  7. Knowledge of arts and crafts and recreational programming; ability to safely operate tools and equipment used in programming.
  8. Familiarity with the use and maintenance of safety equipment.
  9. Ability to teach, train, and supervise youth in structured and unstructured settings.
  10. Must possess a valid Florida Driver License and maintain a driving record consistent with agency policy.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of six (6) months of experience in recreation or arts and crafts instruction, preferably working with children or youth. Must hold, or obtain within a specified timeframe, Lifeguard Instructor certification.
Preference will be given to applicants with a bachelor’s degree in recreation, physical education, leisure studies, education, or a related field.

Job Type: Full-time 

Pay: $18.00 per Hour
